There’s little competition against a beachside picnic in Coromandel, but why not take it one step further with a curated picnic basket hamper. Dive into homemade delights like caramelized onion jam, seedy crackers, feijoa chutney, and Waikato cheese. Just a heads up, our selection may change with the seasons as we're all about using the freshest local produce.

Getting here

Buffalo Lodge is just a short 5-minute drive away from the centre of Coromandel Town.

Getting here by car

When driving up the hill to Buffalo Lodge, you’ll follow a fairly steep gravel road. Brace yourself for a little adventure and take it easy — it’s perfectly safe. There's also a little stream crossing called a ford. It's no drama to drive over, but, if there have been heavy rains and you're not up for it, give us a bell and we’ll come to help.

There’s free parking available for all guests. Two spaces are available in the carport with more spaces below the carport on the left side of the gravel road.

Driving Creek Railway and Pottery

Established in 1972 as one of New Zealand's first potteries, Driving Creek has become a hub for artists worldwide. Hop on the railway tour through regenerating native forest up to the EyeFull Tower for phenomenal views of the Coromandel coastline. Afterwards, take part in a pottery workshop, or glide through the kauri canopies on a zipline tour.

An 8-9 km return, the Success Track is an out-and-back trail starting from behind the Old Coromandel Hospital Building. It takes you up into the bush, eventually reaching 586 metres above sea level at the top of the ridge. Bring lunch and take in the sweeping views of the Coromandel Harbour at the top of the track.

Walk along the coastline from Long Bay to Tucks Bay, the ideal spot for a quiet picnic on the beach. Afterwards, continue on to the Long Bay Kauri Walk, where you're sure to be awestruck by the 1200-year-old kauri tree.

Waiau Kauri Grove and Waterfall

Take a dip in the area's best swimming hole, and follow it up with a quick loop (20-30 minute return) through the mature kauri grove.
